A epidemic of diphtheria strikes, resulting in the death of Poldark and Demelza's child
It just wouldn’t be summer without another series of the BBC’s hit drama Poldark.
The show is back with Aidan Turner reprising his role as the eponymous Ross Poldark, alongside Eleanor Tomlinson as his wife Demelza.
Set in the 18th century, the show sees Poldark returning home from the American War of Independence, only to find that a lot has changed in the three years he was away from the Cornish coast.
But it's not just the intricacies of the various love triangles that keep viewers entertained, the stunning Cornish coastline has also played a large part in the success of the show.
Here’s a few of the places that the drama is filmed should you wish to have your own Poldark-themed mini-break.
Where are the landscape scenes shot?
The majority of filming has taken place on the incredibly green and luscious sweeping landscapes of Bodmin Moor.
The granite moorland “is 208 square kilometres and provides the ideal backdrop for the show's outdoor scenes, including when Poldark is horseriding”, says the Daily Mirror.
Scenes featuring the outside of Poldark’s rustic Nampara cottage are shot on the Moor. It’s also the site of the miners’ cottages, and is home to Dr Dwight Enys’s original cottage and Poldark Way.
Where is the Wheal Leisure mine?
Poldark’s Wheal Leisure Mine has never been short of drama, from lack of funds to serious injuries sustained inside.
The exterior shots for the coastal mine were filmed at the Botallack Mine, which is a National Trust site near St Just on the Penwith Peninsula.
“Wheal Owles and the iconic Crowns engine houses on the clifftop were used for the struggling mine, meanwhile interior scenes were shot at Poldark Tin Mine,” says The Sun.
Where are the beach scenes filmed?
Cornwall’s main calling card - it’s fabulous beaches - have made many appearances throughout the show. With a huge expanse of golden sand and grass-tufted dunes, Holywell Bay has been used several times. Porthcurno, which stands in for Nampara Cove, has also featured several times. Here, “producers found a beach with soft white sand, turquoise water and high cliffs on both sides”, says the Radio Times.
Is there anywhere else of note?
The area of Charlestown near St Austell doubles up as both Cornwall’s city of Truro and the town of Falmout in the series. Charlestown is notable for its Grade II listed harbour, which features numerous Tall Ships and is famed for its traditional appearance.
The high clifftops and heathland of St Agnes Head, with its patchwork of gorse and heather has doubled up as Nampara Valley, part of the Poldark family estate. “It’s a great walking spot where the yellow and purple carpet rewards hikers with far reaching views of Chapel Porth beach,” says the National Trust.
