Expect a release date to be announced during Bethesda’s E3 conference on 11 June
Bethesda Game Studios has surprised fans of the Fallout franchise by launching a preview trailer for a new entry into the post-apocalyptic game series.
The release of the trailer last night had been hinted at hours earlier when the company began streaming a video showing nothing but the franchise’s Vault Boy mascot standing in front of a TV showing a “please stand by” test.
Little is yet known about the new game, called Fallout 76, but the launch trailer suggests the next instalment will take place in apost-apocalyptic setting similar to that in 2015’s Fallout 4, with players likely to begin their adventure from Vault 76.
More details are expected to emerge during the company’s conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), in Los Angeles, on 11 June. Until then, here’s everything we know about Fallout 76 so far:
What is Fallout 76?
Bethesda is keeping quiet about the game’s details, but it is believed Fallout 76 will be a significantly different game to recent entries in the series.
According to Kotaku, Fallout 76 will take the form of an online survival role-playing game (RPG) that is “heavily inspired by games like DayZ and Rust”.
Company insiders familiar with the project told the website that the game is an “experimental” title and was “originally prototyped as a multiplayer version of Fallout 4”.
The sources added that the game will include elements derived from Fallout 4, such as base building and “survival-based” mechanics, along with the introduction of multiplayer gameplay to the franchise.
The game’s setting, Vault 76, will be familiar to fans of the series, however.
According to Fandom, the underground vault is believed to be located “somewhere in Washington D.C.”, probably on the outskirts of the “Capital Wasteland” that featured in Fallout 3.
When will it come out?
An official release date has yet to be revealed, but most of Bethesda’s recent games have been released in the same year they were announced, so Fallout 76 looks likely to hit shelves this autumn.
Fans can expect the game to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, although it’s not known whether a Nintendo Switch version is in the works.
