Snow delays Formula 1 testing in Spain and Scottish football matches are called off

The Winter Olympics ended a few days ago in PyeongChang, South Korea, but if you’re in the UK or Europe it may be worth getting your skis and snowboards out from the cupboard.

The so-called “Beast from the East” has landed, with blizzards hitting the majority of the UK. Many railway stations and airports are cancelling services because of the snow storms, but it’s not just transport that’s being affected by the cold weather.

Many sports, including Formula 1’s pre-season testing in Spain, are having to cope with the white stuff. There is also an ironic tale from Ireland today because an event to celebrate the Winter Olympics team returning home has been cancelled… because of snow.

We take a look at some sporting snow scenes from around the UK and Europe.

F1 testing schedule remains

The third day of F1 pre-season testing was delayed today at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain because of snow.

The BBC reports that the circuit was cleared this morning, but the session was postponed because the medical helicopter was not able to fly in owing to the poor conditions.

Because of today’s delay and forecasted snow tomorrow, there had been suggestions that an extra day would be added to the testing schedule. But Sky Sports F1 understands that the schedule is set to “remain unchanged after the teams failed to agree on a proposal to hold an extra day”.

Scottish football fixtures cancelled

Heavy snow in Scotland means that all three of tonight’s Premiership games are off, the BBC reports. Celtic vs. Dundee, Hibernian vs. Hamilton and Motherwell vs. Aberdeen were all scheduled for tonight, but have been cancelled “in the interest of safety”.

Spurs vs. Rochdale still on

One game that will go ahead is the FA Cup fifth round replay between Tottenham Hotspur and Rochdale tonight at Wembley Stadium. The match kicks off at 7.45pm but Spurs are asking fans to travel to the match in good time because of the weather.

Racing fixtures postponed

Today’s fixture at Newcastle Racecourse has been abandoned and there will be an inspection tomorrow at 8am before the planned afternoon fixture.

While some racecards and football matches have fallen victim to the weather, a number of teams and players are out enjoying the snow or snapping some great pictures. Here’s today’s best tweets…
