The Indian Premier League trophy that the eight teams will compete for in 2018
Cricket’s top players will be up for auction this weekend when the 2018 Indian Premier League player auction takes place in Bangalore tomorrow and Sunday.
Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan are among a pool of 25 England players that the eight IPL franchises will bid for. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell heads a marquee player list that also features Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, Australia bowler Mitchell Starc and West Indies batsman Chris Gayle.

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 guide
What is the IPL?
The IPL is a Twenty20 cricket tournament featuring eight teams. The 2018 edition will be the 11th year and the season starts on 4 April. There will be a total of 60 matches played across India. The final will take place on 27 May in Mumbai.
Which teams play in the IPL?
There are eight IPL franchises: Chennai Super Kings (winners in 2010 and 2011); Delhi Daredevils; Kings XI Punjab; Kolkata Knight Riders (winners in 2012 and 2014); Mumbai Indians (winners in 2013, 2015 and 2017); Rajasthan Royals (winners in 2008); Royal Challengers Bangalore; Sunrisers Hyderabad (2016).
How does the IPL season work?
The eight teams will play each other twice in a home-and-away format. At the end of the double round-robin group stage the top four teams will qualify for the play-offs. The top two teams face off in the “qualifier one” round and the third and fourth-placed teams play in the “eliminator” round. The winner of qualifier one goes straight through to the final, while the loser plays the victor of the eliminator match for a place in the 27 May showpiece event.
When is the 2018 IPL auction?
This weekend – 27-28 January. The IPL auction starts tomorrow at 9am local time (3.30am GMT).
How many players will feature in the IPL auction?
According to the official IPL website, 578 players will go under the hammer this weekend. These include 361 Indian cricketers and 25 from England. Eighteen players have been retained by their franchises for 2018, says the Daily Telegraph.
How are the IPL squads made up?
Teams have a squad size of 18 players minimum and 25 maximum. There is also a maximum of eight overseas players in each squad.
What are the team budgets and which players have been retained?
According to the IPL website, the budgets and retained players are:
- Chennai Super Kings: 47 crore rupees (£5.2million). Retained players: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja
- Delhi Daredevils: 47 crore rupees (£5.2m). Retained players: Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Chris Morris
- Kolkata Knight Riders: 59 crore rupees (£6.5m). Retained players: Andre Russell, Sunil Narine
- Kings XI Punjab: 67.5 crore rupees (£7.4m). Retained players: Axar Patel
- Mumbai Indians: 47 crore rupees (£5.2m). Retained players: Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah
- Rajasthan Royals: 67.5 crore rupees (£7.4m). Retained players: Steve Smith
- Royal Challengers Bangalore: 49 crore rupees (£5.4m). Retained players: Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, AB de Villiers
- Sunrisers Hyderabad: 59 crore rupees (£6.5m). Retained players: David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

How much will players cost at the IPL auction?
